Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is the Queensland Melanoma Institute?
QMI is a network that connects researchers, clinicians, patients and the community across Queensland to reduce the impact of melanoma. We exist to bring people and data together so that research moves faster, from prevention and early detection through to treatment and education. QMI is based at the Translational Research Institute in Woolloongabba and is supported by Metro South Health.
How is QMI different from other melanoma organisations?
QMI doesn't replace the work of patient support groups, cancer charities or research institutes. We connect them. We bring researchers, clinicians and community organisations together so that expertise, data and funding go further.
Who oversees QMI's research and programs?
Our work is guided by a Steering Committee, made up of experts in dermatology, oncology, research, and community health. The Committee ensures research is high-quality, ethical, and aligned with our mission, find out more here
Can QMI give me medical advice or check my skin?
QMI is a research organisation, not a clinic, so we can't provide medical advice, diagnosis or skin checks. If you're worried about a mole or a change in your skin, please see your GP or dermatologist as soon as you can. Early detection saves lives.
Research and Clinical Trials
What types of research does QMI conduct?
We connect researchers and clinicians across Queensland to focus on melanoma prevention, early detection, treatment development through clinical trials, and education – all to improve patient outcomes.
How can I participate in a clinical trial?
Participation is open to patients who meet specific trial criteria. In the first instance you should speak with your healthcare provider about eligibility.
Is participating in a trial safe?
Every clinical trial is reviewed by an independent ethics committee and monitored throughout, with patient safety as the priority. All treatments carry some risk, and the research team will explain the potential benefits and risks before you decide. Taking part is always voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time without affecting your usual care.
How is my personal information protected?
Your privacy matters. Personal and health information collected for research is handled under strict ethical and legal requirements, and is only used in ways you've agreed to.
I have a research idea. Can QMI help me get it started?
Yes! Our program supports collaborations with researchers, clinicians, and community members. We provide guidance, resources, and mentorship to help bring your idea to life. Contact us via melanoma@health.qld.gov.au or 07 3443 8011
Donations
How can I support QMI?
You can donate directly, fundraise in your community, or participate in events. Every contribution helps advance melanoma knowledge and patient care.
Why has QMI partnered with the PA Research Foundation?
Partnering with the PA Research Foundation lets QMI focus on what matters most: research, clinical trials and better care for people affected by melanoma and complex skin cancer. PARF brings more than 40 years of experience managing charitable gifts for the Princess Alexandra Hospital and its research community, so donors can give knowing their support is handled by a trusted, established organisation.
Who is the PA Research Foundation?
The PA Research Foundation is a Queensland charity established in 1984 to support the Princess Alexandra Hospital. It is a statutory body under the Hospitals Foundations Act 2018 and funds medical research, patient support, equipment and staff education.
If I donate to QMI, does my money go to QMI?
Yes. Donations made to QMI are received and managed by the PA Research Foundation on QMI's behalf. The PA Research Foundation retains a percentage of donations for essential administration, governance, and reporting - helping ensure your gift is managed responsibly and achieve the greatest possible impact. Your gift won't be redistributed to other causes or charities.
Why does my receipt say "PA Research Foundation"?
Because PARF processes donations to QMI, your receipt will show the PA Research Foundation's name. Your donation is still allocated to QMI.
Are donations tax-deductable?
Yes, all donations are tax deductible in Australia. Your receipt from the PA Research Foundation can be used for your tax return.
How is my personal information handled?
Your details are collected and stored by the PA Research Foundation in line with its privacy policy and are shared with QMI so we can thank you and keep you updated on our work.
Who can I contact with questions about my donation?
For questions about QMI's work, contact QMI via 07 3443 8011 or melanoma@health.qld.gov.au
For questions about receipts, payments or changes to a regular gift, contact the PA Research Foundation via 07 3180 1840 or general@pafoundation.org.au
